Finding Suitable Right Hand Drive Conversions

By Debra Walker

Some drivers when moving a car to another country will decide to have it converted to make it right hand drive. When trying to locate right hand drive conversions companies there are a few things to think about beforehand. In a lot of countries it is not necessary to modify the car but it does make driving easier and it can be more convenient to have the controls on the right.

Changing a vehicle from LH to RH drive is not just a simple case of swapping things to the other side of the car. The controls will have to be moved as well as electrical switches and interior mirrors. Some fittings may need to be adjusted and major components of the suspension system and the brakes will sometimes need to be changed completely or adjusted.

The least costly way of doing the job is to buy the necessary parts in kit form and do the work yourself. This is a relatively inexpensive way to convert a car and it will be fully functional. It should be noted that the final results when using a kit will be fairly crude with levers, chains and other components visible to the occupants.

Finding and buying a kit is fairly easy as there many internet sites that specialize in packages for popular cars. Many models will be catered for and some older cars too and the kits will be supplied with step by step fitting instructions. It is worth bearing in mind that when performing a modification it may be necessary to buy extra tools to be able to do the work yourself.

Another way to get the conversion done is to get a trained mechanic to carry out your work. Many established and reputable companies can be found that specialize in this type of work and their end results are very good. The costs when hiring a professional will be higher than if you do it yourself but the end results will be covered by a warranty in case of any future breakdowns.

When having the changes done by a professional company the finishing will be a lot better than you will get with a kit. Most components will be hidden and the car will look like it has come out of the factory with the controls on the right. Most companies will also offer excellent aftercare and will continue to look after your vehicle when the work has been completed.

When do the work at home or submit the car to an engineer it is crucial the work is inspected for safety and correct operation. Most companies will give your car back with all of the paperwork and certificates to confirm it is safe. If the car does not have these or it has been modified in your workshop it can be examined by a technician and the relevant documents issued.

One final thing to consider is that if the vehicle is still under a factory guarantee any changes can affect these. If you are planning to sell the car on or trade it the sale value could also be less than that of a standard vehicle. Most insurance companies will also need to be notified and your premiums may increase in some cases.
