By Cynthia Allen

Cummins L series engines are straight 6 diesel engines which are produced and are designed by Cummins. These engine types can displace 10 liters. The production has started in the year 1982 and was named L10. This L10 engine was being based on a predecessor with 8.3 liters and is used into many different applications. This can displace 10 liters and is made available in different forms.

The forms are classified into three types, the vertical form, horizontal form for the buses and the trains under floors, and upright form for the trucks and buses. The L10 is the first engine to be offered competitive by Cummins in the market. This is due to having the earlier productions as too large and too heavy. The introduction also became troublesome, having higher oil consumption and also sealing problems. Here are the installation steps of aftermarket exhausts to an engine of dodge 6.7 Cummins L type.

Be sure to let the engine be cooled first before you are going to touch it. This must be cooled first so you will be protected from any harm because of the engines high temperature. If you touch it, you may provide a pair of gloves or even just any types of cloth for the heat to be lessened. After cooling, start to remove its passenger side fender. Make sure to remove it well so you can have an easy access to V band clamp.

This V band clamp is located in the housing of exhausts of turbo and this serves as the connection to downpipe. After this is cutting the downpipe by the use either a sawzall or a hacksaw. Do this first before cutting the cross member. Doing this will make it easier for you on getting the downpipe from the truck. And after cutting, remove it.

Begin on loosening clamps from exhausts. The component is composed of hangers and these are attached to vehicle frames. These hanger must be removed. The factory exhausts must also be removed with instructions. It is also consist of factory spare tire heat guard which is located on the exhausts tailpipe section. Cut this off and remove it. Through this, the aftermarket is accommodated with much bigger size.

Begin the process of installing the new and the improved aftermarket exhaust. Start on attaching the previously taken factory V band to the downpipe. Then add several pieces of straight exhaust pipes until having to reach the muffler into the proper placement. Aftermarket kits usually are being offered along with pipe pieces having labels of 1, 2, 3, etc.

Muffler hanging. The muffler is required to allow an exhaust pipe to just slide inside it in any directions. This step may be considered as difficult to some, so they are suggested to make us of pliers to stretch muffler ends. Looking for a partner is also recommended when you hang the muffler.

Hanging over the tailpipe section and axle pipe. Make sure that all the hangers will be hung well. A penetrating oil is suggested for use in making the hangers just slide easily into rubber brushings.

And lastly is the process of reinstalling passenger side fender. Be sure to reinstall this very well. When cranking a truck up, avoid some rattling sounds through checking the looseness of exhaust. Testing all operations is recommended after all the processes are done.
