Firewood refers to any wooden material that can be used as fuel for various purposes. Wood fuel in general is classified as a renewable resource. To find quality firewood Calgary is a recommendable destination.

Wood fuel has the longest history as a fuel used in the domestic setting. People in the ancient world made fires using wood to warm themselves and to cook their food. Wood is still used for the same purpose even today, even though the manner in which it is applied has changed a lot. Today, especially in developed countries, wood fuel is used in sophisticated stoves and furnaces.

Wood is still used in the basic ways is several parts of the world. The method of harvesting or collecting wood differs in many parts of the world. In certain places wood collection is allowed in particular areas. The specific places have trees grown to be harvested and used as fuel. Land preparation efforts may also include wood collection is some parts of the world.

In most parts of the globe, preparation of firewood is only done partially to allow for transportation. Once the wood has reached the place it is meant to be used, it is prepared further so that it can be used. Charcoal making may however be done at the location where he the wood was harvested.

Splitting the wood further into smaller parts can be part of the preparation process. This can be achieved using different tools. A splitting maul can be used if the work is not much. On the other hand, hydraulic splitting machines can be used when the work is a lot. Wood auger can also be achieved using a tapered screw-style design. One must understand that this technique is dangerous and as such it is rarely utilized.

Wood is stored in different ways depending on the preference of a person and the place. A person may prefer simple stacks other people prefer storing it on a free standing stack. Other people store firewood in sophisticated storage facilities. Storage of firewood is done for one main reason to prevent contact with water which might spoil the wood. Storage is usually done after preparation of the wood.

The making of stacks involves placing wood next to and on top of each other. This creates a line that has the same width as the logs. How high the stack can go usually varies, depending on the construction of the ends. Constructing the ends help the stack to go higher than when the ends are not constructed. The stack can then be covered using terracotta tiles, sheet metal, plywood, oiled canvas or any other material capable of shedding water.

While storing, wind and sunshine should be able to reach the stack because they help to expedite the drying process. How much time is needed for the firewood to dry completely may depend on a few factors such as weather, type of wood, and how much it is covered. Wood on the outer surfaces is likely to dry faster than one buried deep into the stack.
