Natalie Decker Racing: How Women Are Changing Motorsport, One Gear At A Time

By Martha Brown

Motorsport has been for the longest time been a sport where access to it was determined by some dangly bits between your legs. But in recent times, those without these so important dangly bits as Natalie Decker Racing Team, have made a compelling argument as to why they don t matter and what does is how fast you can go around a corner.

First of all, there exists a large misconception of how women are treated in this male-dominated industry when in reality. It s people of different sexes, genders culminating together for the love of motor vehicles and pushing themselves and those vehicles to the limit. And winning some shiny along the way to prove that they are the best at what they do, be it rallying, drifting or even driving fast around a race course.

The biggest benefit the sport of motor racing owes to the individuals it has turned its back towards in the past. Is that as the days go by, more and more females are finding an interest in the sport and pursue it because of a genuine interest in it. Meaning that as time goes on and the industry faces the wrong it s made, the sport will be recognized as a gender-neutral sport by society, similar to tennis.

Hopefully, sometime in the future, there ll be races with both sexes at the starting line.because when all is said and done, racing is about who can cross the start/finish line first among their peers. With the proper training regiment and talent, there should be no reason why that can t be.

Yes, the stereotype that boys are meant to play with cars and girls with dolls still prevails, despite changing attitudes. In these modern times, it s easier to enlist a daughter to a driving school tailor-made to harness the driving skill in all those it enlists, when you consider that driving became a viable option that could be pursued by women in the 1920 s.

But as more and more females find themselves fulfilling their dreams, a new generation can find themselves with idols to look forward to. And ways to get into motorsport from a young age as it becomes more and more socially acceptable for little girls at the go-kart track, honing their skills. After all, it was once illegal for people other than men with curly beards to vote, but look at the world now.

But all this scrutiny has one thing going for it. It can either make you or break you as a motorsport driver of the opposite sex. The exact same scrutiny that can be used to highlight just how well or even better you are than your male peers. It then bottles down to perspective and a little luck.

With all of that said and done, it hasn t be a walk in the park for a woman when it comes to racing. But inroads have been made to change the worldview and perception of people because gender roles are overrated.
