Traditionally, there are two main types of driving systems, that is, left hand and right hand driving systems. The right hand driving system was introduced by Great Britain and since its introduction, only 52 states have adopted the system. That number accounts for only a quarter of the world. There are various aspects the conversion touches, starting with the dashboard. Removal and replacement of dashboard with an LHD one needs to be done. An LHD steering rack assembly should replace the RHD one. One may not replace wiring harness behind the dashboard but can turn it around to suit the new configuration. When converting, there is effect on safety air bags. One must reposition and re-line the brake master cylinder as well.

The wiper motor, pedal assembly, door panels, door mounted electric controls and wiper mechanisms all demand re-lining and repositioning. Access to accessories of the transmission and the engine with the aim of repositioning is aided by removal of the engine and the transmission. Accessories that are supposed to be realigned include AC ducts, blower motor, cables, heat core and wires are all positioned on the firewall.

It is important to know that there are some dangers associated with conversion of a vehicle from LHD to RHD or vice versa. First of all, steering may disengage when in motion, causing the vehicle to lose control and cause accident. Any conversion is also never 100 percent successful. That means that there is always some margin of error in the process.

Converted vehicles also commonly come with fatigue failure problems. Normally, parts that are produced by manufacturers are meant to be resistant to fatigue. Manufacturers spend much time and capital to produce high quality fatigue resistant parts. When converting, the mechanic may apply lower quality components, exposing the vehicle to possible fatigue failure.
